Starfish Gazette- March 25, 2016

Dear Starfish Families,

It has been a great week in the Starfish classroom.  We started our week with centers with Mrs. Glance and later shared our math center time with Mr. Coate. We heard Cooper F, Gloria, Quin, Ainsley, and Jack share their books for March Super Readers. It's been wonderful to watch our 1st graders show off their reading power to their peers and in return receive positive praise and compliments for their reading. We used K'nex in Maker Lab and started talking about the upcoming Maker Fest in May.  We dived deep into our reading unit with bringing our characters to life.  We identified some clues that authors use in their stories to help reader know when to change their reading voice.  As a class we put our attention to character dialogue, punctuation, and character illustrations to determine how to bring our characters to life.

What's Happening in Social Detectives?
How big is your problem?

In Social Detectives, the children are working together to understand the difference between small, medium, and big problems.  Mrs. Curry is teaching the starfish how to identify a problem and categorize the size.  We will soon be learning ways to react and handle problems.

Questions we have used to guide their understanding-Can I solve this problem on my own?  Do I need help?  Is someone hurt? Can I walk away from this? Will it take me a long time to solve this problem?

Readers Can Notice When Characters Change.  Then, Readers Can Change Their Voice

The Starfish are using Emojis to help track their character's emotions.

We are also using the Ipad App, Shadow Puppet to record our reading voices to improve our character voices.

Have a wonderful weekend and we hope you enjoy the bunny cards we made for you!

Happy Easter!
