Writer's Workshop and Makerfest

This morning our class was able to walk down to the Makerfest display in our cafeteria. The kids had a great time exploring the many displays from the students in our school. It's wonderful that SMS students have this platform to display their passions and creativity from outside of school with their peers. Congratulations to our Starfish friends who participated in the Makerfest this year! You are all so talented and creative. You were beaming with pride showing off your work!

Writer's Workshop: Writing Series Fiction Stories

I have beyond impressed with our first grade writers. It's one of our favorite parts of our day. The kids are highly engaged and proud of their writing. We are working on story structure, character development, dialogue, and conventions in their writing. Ask your child about their series! We can't wait to share our stories with you soon!

What's Happening?

One of our favorite Starfish celebrated his birthday over vacation! Happy 7th birthday!

We had our first practice on the stage this morning with the whole first grade! We can't wait to practice again tomorrow!

Today we started our new fiction writing unit.  Below you will see some of the covers to our new writing folders.  Prior to vacation, the Starfish dove into many series books during reader's workshop.  We brainstormed main characters and character traits.  We talked about how authors often choose characters based on prior experiences and people in our lives.  We can't wait to share more as we begin writing our stories! Ask your first grader about their book characters.  Many already have story ideas and problems that will happen in their series!
