Hi Starfish Families,
March has been another fun and busy month in our 1st grade classroom! It is truly amazing to watch these first graders each day learn strategies to become independent workers, thoughtful readers, and kind friends.
We are learning about:
- properties of matter
- Bossy R words
- adding and subtracting 10 and 20 to numbers up to 120
- how scientists write the results to a science experiment
- Learning how to write numbers in expanded form
- Understanding compound words and contractions
- building our fact power to 20
- Learned math vocabulary: Sum, addend
- how good readers respond to books using post it notes
- using punctuation to show how the charter is feeling in our writing
Some activities we did:
- made OOblick with Mrs. Gunnell
- Finishing our Mo Willems stories
- Created Solid, Liquid, and Gas posters on the computer with Mrs. O'Connor
- Used post-it notes to uncover contractions in books from our classroom library
- Created our own compound word riddles
- wrote about our Purple Fizzy Cow and Ooblick experiments in our science journals
- Practiced missing addend math problems with partners
The Girls having fun exploring OObleck in the classroom

The Purple Fizzy Cow: This experiment showed the differences between a solid, liquid, and gas!
We are getting ready to celebrate Read Across America on Friday at SMS!
We loved sharing our 1st words and baby pictures to tie into our reading unit on Mo Willems! Thank you for your help in making this happen!

Check our our Kindness Chain: We are spotting acts of kindness in our classroom! The kids have earned over 50 chains so far! We are hoping to make the chain go around the classroom by JUNE!
